From September 11th to 13th, 2025, I had the privilege of attending the International Leadership Training (ILT) 2025 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, organized by the Africa Scout Region with support from the Interamerica Scout Region. This unique gathering brought together 26 passionate young leaders from across Africa with one goal – to grow as leaders and strengthen our capacity to serve our communities and Scouting.
Over the three days, we went through a carefully designed program that combined practical leadership skills with deep reflections on service, collaboration, and the role of youth in shaping our future.
Day 1: Defining Leadership
We began by reflecting on what leadership truly means, the different leadership styles, and what it takes to become an effective leader in today’s world. It was inspiring to share perspectives with young people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, all united by the Scouting spirit.
Day 2: The Nuts and Bolts
Day 2 was intense and eye-opening. We explored the challenges leaders face, the “nuts and bolts” of leadership, and the importance of servant leadership in shaping organizational culture. We discussed the challenges facing our National Scout Organizations (NSOs) and recognized how young people can turn those challenges into opportunities for service. Sessions on Youth Leadership in WOSM, Scout donation platforms, and the role of Youth Forums reminded us of the critical role we play in strengthening Scouting and creating platforms for youth participation.
Day 3: Taking a Seat at the Table
On Day 3, we looked at how young leaders can take a place at the leaders’ table and be part of decision-making processes at every level. We navigated through ethical dilemmas, explored the contribution of Scouts for SDGs, and learned about Monitoring & Evaluation and action planning. The training closed with reflection and evaluation, but it was clear to all of us that this was not the end—it was the beginning of greater action.
This experience was more than just training; it was about building connections, exchanging ideas, and preparing to take the next steps in leading change. The Africa Scout Region now has a stronger network of young leaders equipped with the skills, knowledge, and vision to make a lasting impact in Scouting and in their communities.
Word of Encouragement to the Youth
To every young person reading this, I want to remind you: you are not too young to lead and not too small to make a difference. Leadership is not about titles or positions, but about service, integrity, and the courage to act. The future of our communities, our countries, and our continent rests in our hands. Take every opportunity to learn, to serve, and to lift others as you rise.
As Scouts and as young leaders, let us continue to live by the values of service, unity, and innovation, because together, we can and will create a better world.
